From the desk of ‘REED Goes Green’

It’s been a while since we’ve shared an update on REED’s sustainability journey, so let’s catch up on what we’ve been up to lately in the REED office! If you’d like to read about our sustainability initiatives from last spring, you can check them out here.

Through our partnership with Urban Green Lab (UGL), we achieved certified Silver status for our current eco-friendly work and are actively working on reaching Gold status. We also hosted the May UGL Sustainability Roundtable, a bi-monthly meeting of sustainably-minded professionals and businesses in Nashville. Through our goal of educating our community and connecting with other small companies focusing on sustainability, we spoke about our sustainability journey, ways to prioritize eco-friendly efforts in our busy day-to-day work and greenwashing and sustainability communication. REED was the first communications firm to host a roundtable, and our team had a great time connecting with business leaders in the community.

This spring, we participated in the second annual Climate Innovation Accelerator program through the Wond’ry at Vanderbilt. This ten-week program combined learning sessions from professionals in the innovation and sustainability sectors and a student team developing a project proposal for a company initiative. Our Green Team lead, Brook Farrell, spent time on campus learning from some of the best and brightest in the industry and getting to know the ten other local

organizations participating in the cohort. She brought what she had learned back to the team to share key insights and best practices. While she was attending learnings, the REED student team also heard from experts and put together a project proposal to help REED gain B Corp status.

Our team has worked hard over the past year to measure our business practices against the guidelines of B Lab, the industry leader. Through the B Impact Assessment, REED has been able to target goals for the company as we continue to grow. We have a long-term goal of reaching B Corp status in 2025.

In addition to the larger projects we’ve been working on, we are still doing our part to keep sustainability fun with monthly team challenges and incentives. For Earth Day, our team spent the afternoon volunteering with Friends of Beaman Park, pulling invasive species to help the wildflowers bloom.

To encourage reusable water bottles in the office, each team member has a Fill it Forward sticker on their water bottles to track our impact and give back for every refill.

We’ve been busy in the REED office this past year, but worry not. We always take our core value of Giving Back seriously, and are working hard on ongoing and future initiatives. If you have a question about sustainability or a suggestion for us to consider, send us a note: [email protected].
